For those loving Hanoi winter ...

So, the winter really have come, when you wake up early in the morning, going out, but still shudder softly with a cold wind although weared a warm coat.

The sky at night hasn’t got blear light, and the faint figure of the moon at the end of fall…only have cold wind with night dew….The cold of early season has just wormed lightly on each road, but seeing stream of people to be more hasty, the street at night is more deserted, and the perfume of broiled-corn mingled with the winds.

Ha Noi winter is easy to feel, recognize, not only gust of cold wind or colorful jumper is running freely on the street, but also a flaming firewood-stove. The saleswoman, one hand fans charcoal, another one turns round the maize, occasionally, stop to wipe beads of perspiration is stagnating on her forehead. The guests come to appreciate soft and sweet taste and graceful scent of corn in early winter, besides, they want to sit side by side, near the stove, to feel the warm reek on their face. The pale face because of the cold wind before, just a little time will become pink, but no need any lipstick or powder…

Ha Noi in winter hasn’t got snow, but fog spreads in desolate street, having fadeless sunlight, and having gust of melting north-east wind. It is enough for each people self-find for themselves a couple of indistinct moment in the sunset on the road.

And perhaps, only that thing is invaluable gift for the people love Ha Noi, love Ha Noi winter…

Secrets of My Son Sanctuary

Local and foreign visitors to the My Son Sanctuary, located some 650 km south of Hanoi, still marvel at the remarkable architectural ensemble that developed over a thousand years from the 4th to the 13th century.

The sanctuary, which has been declared a World Heritage site by the United Nations, presents a vivid picture of spiritual and political life in an important phase of Vietnam's history. Its signature features include a series of impressive temple towers located in a valley surrounded by mountains. The area was the religious center for the capital of the Champa Kingdom.

There are a lot of secrets about the Champa Temples in the My Son Sanctuary that still remain a mystery for most people, including the Vietnamese themselves. Many people have visited the sanctuary, but they do not understand how the Champa people built the temples and how they made bricks.

The bricks here are more than a thousand years old, but they remain sturdy. Nobody knows about the technology used by the Champa people and even archaeologists cannot explain how this was possible. One of the biggest mysteries in My Son is how the bricks were stuck together, although some Vietnamese archaeologists have theorized that the builders used organic resin glue. However, no one knows for sure what kind of materials the builders used.

The temples in My Son Sanctuary are constructed with kiln-fired brick and have stone pillars decorated with sandstone bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The technological sophistication as shown by the temples and stone pillars are a testament to Champa engineering skills, while the elaborate iconography and symbolism of the towers give insight into the content and evolution of Champa religious and political thought.

When visiting My Son, it is easy to tell the difference between the original walls and the restored walls. The old walls have a bright color, while the restored walls are darker. It is believed that when finishing the construction of the temples, the Champa people used a special mortar to cover the outer layer in order to harden it.

After centuries of disuse, My Son was rediscovered by French scholars in 1898, and restoration work began in 1937.

In 1979, the My Son Sanctuary was recognized as a National Site by the Vietnamese Culture Ministry and was later ratified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1999 based on two prominent criteria - it is a typical example of cultural exchange and a unique artifact of an extinct Asian civilization.

The 71 temples in My Son were built into groups that basically followed the same model. Each group comprised a main tower, or kalan, surrounded by smaller towers and auxiliary monuments. The kalan symbolizes the sacred mountain of Meru at the center of the universe where the Gods live, and it is dedicated to Shiva.

The small temples are devoted to the spirits of the eight compass points. The towers are stocked with offerings and sacred objects from pilgrims. The main temples do not have windows, so it is very dark inside. Windows are only found in the towers.

Another mystery in My Son is how the decorative carvings were installed. Were the walls constructed and then carved, or were the bricks carved first and then assembled to create the walls? An examination of the carvings reveals no broken lines as expected if the bricks were carved first and then assembled. Scientists believe that the craftsmen made the carvings directly onto finished brick walls. This technique is unique in Asia.

In addition to the construction methods, the ancient language is another mystery of My Son. It is difficult to translate the writings here. They are derived from the Sanskrit language. The language found in My Son Sanctuary was used by the upper class and for religion and not representative of what ordinary people spoke. It dates back 800 years and was carved by a very good technology so it can still be seen very clearly at present.

In the morning and afternoon, it is cool like the weather of spring and autumn. At noon, it is as sunny and cloudless as the weather of summer. And it is cold in the evening.

The best time to visit Sa Pa as well as the northern mountain is from mid-September to early December or from March to May, when the weather is fairly settled with dry sunny days and clear cold nights. In April and May, Sa Pa is blooming with flowers and green pastures. During this period the temperature is ranging from 15 – 25 Degree Celsius, it is not a raining season in Sa Pa so the trekking routes are dry and bear great opportunity to do longer treks and to conquer Mount Fansipan. During the winter months, the temperature is much cooler and it is advised to bring some warm clothing (hat, sweater, wool socks) for after you days for trekking. Also, during the winter months there are periods of light rain, which brings in the fog. This puts Sa Pa in the clouds and allows for some fantastic photo opportunities.

Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh province, approximately 135 km from Hanoi and 60 km from Hoa Binh. From the top of Cun Mountain, one can admire the superb panorama of Mai Chau surrounded by a green valley and stilt houses. Many minorities, including the H'Mong and Thai ethnic group, live in Mai Chau.

Stilt houses border both sides of the roads. The houses are quite large with palm leaf roofs and polished bamboo-slat floors. The kitchen is located in the center of the house; the cooking as well as the making of the colorful brocatelle, the material used by Thai minority to make their clothes, takes place in the kitchen. The windows are large and decorated with patterns. Each house also has a pond to breed fish.

The Sunday market brings a lot of people into town. People from different minorities living in the mountains come to Mai Chau market to sell their specific products: honey, bananas, corn, and brocatelle fabrics made by skilled Thai women. The Sunday market is also an occasion to enjoy traditional Thai dishes and to participate in traditional dances. Mai Chau can be a base for some trekking tours to the villages around. Viet Nam – a famous “dark tourism” destination in the world

The term Dark Tourism, War Tourism, or Conflict Tourism is tourism involving travel to sites associated with death and tragedy. They may be sites of famous battles, places where atrocities have occurred, and other such sobering locations. Often, former servicemen and women wish to revisit places where they fought for their country, lost comrades, and made lifelong friends. Some visit due to ancestral links to the area and what happened there, and others for historical interest, and such is the attraction of these places that they often become tourist sites, sometimes with museums and other exhibitions that detail what occurred in the past.

In Viet Nam, there are many options for those seeking sites significant to the country’s wars. Tourists visiting Ha Noi in the north of Vietnam, may wish to visit Hoa Lo Prison, known to American prisoners of war held there. Visitors to Hoi An in the central of the country, meanwhile, can book tours to the nearby site of the My Lai Massacre, where hundreds of women and children were brutally murdered by US soldiers during the Vietnam war. Besides, a trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels in the south of the country near Ho Chi Minh City is also an ideal selection. The 121km complex of tunnels, part of a much larger network throughout the country, was used by Viet Cong forces during the conflict and has been preserved as part of a war memorial park.

Despite the uncomfortable nature of dark tourism, it seems to be something most of us will have engaged with at one point in our lives. And, Viet Nam is really an ideal destination for this kind of tourism.
