Bat Trang – a paradise of souvenirs
Tourists in Hanoi City can take an interesting short trip to Bat Trang pottery village to buy elegant souvenirs and become a ceramic artisan for the day.
The village is a quarter full of ceramic shops, offering many household utensils such as bowls, cups, plates and pots for decoration purposes. Visiting some stores, a souvenir lover may find out everything they need, from a sophisticated statue with traditional patterns for worshiping to colorful tea cups and fun ceramic piggy banks.
Foreign travelers should visit the office of Bat Trang Conservation & Tourism Development Joint Stock Company which displays ceramic antiques, products and jewelries as well as ceramic production workshops. English and French speaking staff will help tourists learn about the history of the village and the ceramic production process, and choose suitable products.
We were so excited at the beautiful products and interesting services at the company. We had our images painted on ceramic dishes and watched artisans paint bowls and cups. Visitors were also invited to join artisans in production and bring home products they had made.
It is quite easy to reach the craft village which is around 10 kilometers from the ancient quarter in central Hanoi City. The cheapest way is to take the Long Bien-Bat Trang bus near Dong Xuan Market with the end terminal in Bat Trang. The bus runs every 20 minutes. But if you are don’t fancy the crowded bus, you can go there by taxi or motorbike.

Hai Van Pass - the highest pass in Vietnam
Lying on Highway No. 1 on the border between Thua Thien-Hue province and Danang City, Hai Van Pass is not only one of the most scenic hillside roads in Vietnam but also the highest pass in the country. When joining tours in Vietnam and visiting this place, you will have a chance to discover peace, quiet and history along the way.
The meaning of Hai Van is wind and cloud or sea cloud since the peak of the mountain is in the clouds while its foot is close to the sea. Hai Van Pass is like a giant dragon, which is considered to be one of the largest frontier posts in Vietnam.
From the Hai Van Pass, tourists are able to see one of the major tourist attractions, which is the panoramic view of the Danang city, Tien Sa port, Son Tra peninsula and long white sandy beach.
Whenever one goes through Hai Van Pass, two feelings are experienced: amazement at passing through the clouds and fear when seeing the dangerous bends of the road. A 21km-long road over Hai Van Pass, opened at the end of the 19th century, winds back and forth to a height of 435m above sea level. The drive over the pass gives the visitors thrill of tearing through the clouds on the winding road up and down the pass.
The pass is crowned with the vestiges of a fortified gateway built by the French which is now covered with moss. This gateway acts as entrance and exit points of Thuan Hoa and Quang Nam provinces. These points are indicated by the inscribed words “Hai Van Gate” on the one facing Thua Thien and “the most grandiose gateway in the world” on the one looking down on Quang Nam.
From the top of Hai Van Pass, one can admire Lang Co Beach to the north and Danang to the south. The curving railway through Hai Van Pass is 3,200m long including sections running through seven tunnels. There are endless forests to the west of Hai Van Pass and the ocean is to the east.

No wonder, Hai Van Pass is a real challenge for drivers, as well as for adventurers and it is listed among one of the most visited of the various popular destinations in tours in Vietnam.

Some guides for visiting minorities’ villages in Sapa
When coming Sapa , many visitors like to visit villages of minorities here very much. In this writing, I provide you some guides to make your trip more perfect.
1. Going in small group
For many people, one of the highlights of travelling in Sapa is the experience of visiting minority villages.
If at all possible, it’s preferable to visit the minority villages as a part of a small group, ideally four people or less, as this causes least disruption and allows for greater communication. There is a whole debate about the ethnics of cultural tourism and its negative impact on traditional ways of life. Most villagers are genuinely welcoming and hospitable to foreigners, appreciating contact with Westerners and the material benefits which they bring.
2. Remember you are a guest
Behavior that we take for granted may cause offence to some ethnic minority people; remember you are a guest. Apart from being sensitive to the situation and keeping an open mind, the following simple rules should be observed when visiting the ethnic minority areas.
Dress modestly, in long trousers or skirt and T-shirt or shirt.
3. When taking photographs
Be sensitive to people’s wishes when taking photographs, particularly of older people who are suspicious of camera; always ask permission first.
4. When entering their house
Only go inside a house when invited and remove your shoes before entering.
5. When giving gifts
Small gifts, such as fresh fruit from the local market, are always welcome. However, there is a view that even this can foster begging, and that you should only ever give in return for some service or as a sign of appreciation for hospitality. A compromise is to buy craftwork produced by the villagers-most communities should have some embroidery, textiles or basketry for sale.
6. Learning local basic terms of addressAs a mark of respect, learn the local term of address, either in dialect or at least in Vietnamese, such as chao ong, chao ba.
7. Be careful with local environments
Try to minimize your impact on the often fragile local environment; take litter back to the towns and be sensitive to the use of wood and other scarce resources.
8. Opium using is illegal
Growing and using opium is illegal in Vietnam and is punished with a fine or prison sentence; do not encourage its production by buying or smoking opium.
